Air Collision in Brazil Triggers Strong Words of Blame

Embraer LegacyIt's been a week since the collision of an Embraer Legacy 600 jet with GOL Airlines 737-800 Flight 1907 which plunged into the Amazon jungle Friday, killing all 154 people aboard in Brazil's worst air disaster. Some peculiar facts about the accident are turning the case into a battle of words about responsibilities in the Brazilian blogosphere, and the usual media sensationalism on these kinds of stories is fueling the heated debate.

As specialists affirm that the crash involved airplanes equipped with some of the most modern navigation tools available, and Brazilian air traffic system had just gone through a four-year, $121.5 million modernization which renders the capability of separating high-altitude traffic in 1,000-foot increments, the conjecture of a possible human failure of the Americans piloting the Brazilian-made aircraft naturally emerged. But what seems to have triggered the national animosity in this case was the odd presence of a New York Times reporter in the Legacy, and his determined attempt to defend the pilots through his blog, and also in the NYTimes.

Sabe, Mr. Sharkey?! Parafraseando o seu post, apetece-me dizer-lhe que… «astonished» estou eu!!!

On Monday October 2nd, Mr Sharkey wrote a post which he called “Astonished to Be Alive” , and on the next day another one titled “Colliding With Death at 37,000 Feet, and Living” (where he puts a link to the article published in the NY Times describing the accident between the Gol Airlines 737-800 and the Legacy jet in which he was traveling). That's how we came to know that besides being well and alive, and appearing on TV and writing to his newspaper, Mr. Sharkey kept caring about his blog and maintaining access to the Internet. I read what he wrote. I read also the comments left on the blog. And it is here that I am inevitably struck by astonishment, when I perceive that many appeals from Brazilian journalists were left there describing the obvious desolation from people who try to understand the unexplainable, which is the case of the victims’ relatives and, to the limits, a whole country which is confronted with the worst air disaster in its history. Reading the 111 comments left until then we can see requests from Folha de Sao Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo, Jornal do Brasil… and so on! From what we could see, Mr. Sharkey ignored all of them without exception, but honored (of course!) invitations from NBC's Today show and ABC's World News. You know, Mr. Sharkey?! Paraphrasing your post, I got to say that… “astonished” am I!!!

the “New York Times” reporter Joe Sharkey, who was aboard the Legacy at the moment of the collision, affirmed in an interview at CNN that he considers the Brazilian air traffic control “horrible”. (UOL, Oct 05) By his declaration we should admit that during all this time, the dozens of flights that travel over the Amazon jungle everyday for the last 3 decades are really lucky to have never kissed each other one single time other than this one, isn't it?
Luck, nothing more than thatIt is the following… ok?

The more acrimonious posts seem to be generated by the semi dormant anti-US sentiment always ready to be triggered and magnified in such cases. The real problem appears when influential voices from traditional media fuel speculations not fully supported by verified facts. But on the other side of things, Americans have got to get accustomed to the way their country is perceived nowadays by the rest of the world. The image of the human rights crusader is no more.

Shut up
From time to time there comes an American idiot trying to appear as the ‘master of reason’ while execrating Brazil. ” The Brazilian air traffic control is horrible” said Joe Sharkey — NYTimes journalist who was in the jet that hit Gol's airplane– about the lamentable accident that happened with flight 1907 in the Amazon. The good one is theirs, right? Thanks to rebola na rede.
American Idiot says that “The Brazilian air traffic control is HORRIBLE!!!”Round Corner

I still think that this whole story is not connected with the truth. It seems that the guy is trying to wave flags in favor of the American pilots, but according to what is being said here, they are f**ked. Until now, for me, the version that is closer to what might have happened was told by Alexandre Garcia [a famous Brazilian media anchor] in Bom Dia Brazil [Globo Network's Morning News Show]: “… while the 1907 flight was following its usual pattern in a thoroughly used airway, the North American pilot in the Legacy may have succumbed to test the brand new jet judging that the Amazon could be a deserted airspace. As the air traffic control would have forced him to maintain a certain altitude, he would have turned off the transponder that would have broadcast his position, and then hit the Boeing at the caudal appendage, which controls direction and depth. The damage on the Legacy's winglet and empennage could show that the jet could be making an inclined maneuver…”

Seriam considerados TERRORISTAS.

ExcelAire, the American company owner of the Legacy which hit Gol's Boeing on September 29 wants to remove the pilots Joseph Lepore and Jan Paladino from Brazil as quick as possible. Even the State Secretary Condoleezza Rice is being mobilized to intervene in the case in order to bring the pilots back to the US. And if it was the contrary? If a Brazilian was held accountable for a disaster in the American air space with only one passenger, would he come back to Brazil? What about two Brazilians crashing with an airplane with 154 passengers aboard? What would possibly happen with them? They would be jailed, unreachable, handcuffed, suffering all types or aggressions and humiliations. They would be treated as terrorists.

Apart from the strong anti-US reactions in the blogosphere and the media, some bloggers call for a more balanced approach. And, as always, bloggers offer some interesting new perspectives.

Silvio Sanchez in O Caso Gol-LegacyBlog do Nassif

What we observe now is a push-push game to see who will be stuck with the blame at the end. It is known that an airplane accident is made of a sequence of failures and errors. We can't embrace a theory that exclusively blames the American pilots… I hope that in this course crucifixion does not harm Brazilian pilots that will be traveling to the US. Errors do not depend on nationalities…. In this village, all houses have glass ceilings.

Embraer was used to receiving three consultations per month from people interested in buying the Legacy jet, but this week there were already nine requests. According to a consultancy, the accident which killed 154 passengers from a Gol's Boeing can reinforce the jet's image of security. ‘Literally a jet that knocked down a Boeing”.

Nevertheless, old grievances and disputes always find ways to come back…

“It is amazing (and good) that you´re all safe and sound. Well, well, well… who would say that a Brazilian airplane would survive and a Boeing… American…would not. Needless to say, it is a good time to remind American people that it was SANTOS DUMONT – a Brazilian – who invented the airplane, not the Wright Brothers…ok? By the way, you could have been more sensitive to the victims´suffering. Shame on the US.”

  • Oi Alex,
    Valeu a visita e o comentário.

    Hi There,

I’m brazilian and my english is poor but enouth to make myself clear.

    It’s allways the same story.

You americains live in a very controlled pseudo-democracy. You don’t have any freedom when you go party: if you drink a beer, DWI. You can’t smoke a cigarette in the clubs. If you say something nice to a girl, she may suit you. And if you are over 50 years and single, the chance to get nice free sex is almost zero. Except if you are a college teacher…

So. When you cross border to south america you behave yourselfes as pirates, disrespecting all laws that you obei in the USA.

I do remember an terrible car accident at Copacabana beach involving some Navy Americains. Five young brazilian girls died. Investigation: the Navy boys where all drunk and crash at a speed of 110 miles. Besides that, daily incidents involving pathetic behavior of americains in Rio related to drugs and rules of basic education happens.

It is not a very surrealistic picture to imagin that the ocupants of the Legacy where somewhou repeting this pirate mentality during there flight:

The pilots turned off the transponder and say: “Let’s see what this brazilian babe (airplane from Embraer) can hadle!” and started to do some crazy manoevers. In the same time, at the cabin, a big party whas taking place with nice young brazilian girls (or boys), couwboy whiskey and coke…

And when you arrive home, you give a big hug in your kids, walk the dog, kiss your whife, and say: “Honney, I miss you so much!”

Don’t whory if your boys stay in jail in Brazil. Whe use to give to our prisoners a better treatment than you do at Abou Graib and Guatanmalo.

It appears that Hollywood fiction has tarnished the image of America and its people. The image that is depicted is one of an immoral, lawless, and corrupt society. What a shame that most of the people of the world will only get to see these fantasies of Hollywood producers, and never ever see America as it truly is. If only they could all get a chance to experience America personally, and not through their silly television set. It is no wonder that Islamic nations, the French, the Germans, the Venezuelans, and even the Brazilians hate Americans so much. What a shame for them.

  • […] Ten weeks have passed since the mid-air collision that produced Brazil’s worst air disaster, but the issue is still bouncing around many levels. As the investigations progressed, the blame game amplified by the media has triggered many reactions. The most widely felt effects have come from a movement among air traffic controllers, who began following regulations to the letter, significantly slowing operations and causing delays in airports across Brazil. The movement is seen as a response to the attempts to identifying possible human failures on the part of the controllers who were on duty during that tragic September 29th afternoon. The politics of the resulting chaos is being widely discussed and Brazilians, as usual, have labeled the crisis with a buzz word — this time it’s the ‘aerial blackout’ (apagão aéreo). […]

  • […] Last Friday, at the same time Lula was in the air traveling to the US to visit President Bush, a huge crisis was developing back in Brazil. Air traffic controllers had started a strike protesting working conditions, paralyzing flights across the nation and bringing the “Aerial Blackout” crisis to a climax. The problems were started last year with the disintegration of Varig, Brazil’s one-time flagship airline, and signs of persistent failure in air traffic control in the southern and central regions of the country were already being noticed by the media in March. It only got worse after the Sept. 29 collision which became Brazil’s worst air disaster, as the controllers started to perform slowdowns that brought delays in airports all over the country. […]
