Cuba: Vitral Closed Due to Lack of Resources

Further to media speculation that the Catholic magazine Vitral was closed because of pressure from the Cuban government, Uncommon Sense links to a Catholic News Agency statement that attributes the closure to a lack of resources.

  • The original statment and the subsequent quote on this anti-Cuba blog (which does not allow me to post civilized comment there) says quite clearly that Cuban Government or Church hierarchy had nothing to do with this. There was a change in Bishop, and he did not share the committment it took to produce the magazine. When the necessary supplies become available, it will restart they say. The shutdown is temporary, according to everyone, but the media (and bloggers) love to push the idea that the Cuban government shut it down.

  • Newsflash, the new Bishop has issued a statement picked up by AP. He clarifies what I was trying to say for him above. He says:

“No one ever spoke of ‘closing’ or ‘terminating’” the diocesan journal Vitral after 13 years of publication, Serpa says, but he has asked that Vitral maintain “the truth based in the gospel and the social doctrine of the church, without falling into aggressive and argumentative expression.”

You’ll forgive us from jumping to conclusions, won’t you Leftside? …considering how many magazines and newspapers the government has shut down since the revolution. What is it, 50? 60? …not to mention private tv. So take your self righteous “I told you so” and shove it.
