Imagethief comments on an article at the Boao Forum for Asia, published in Xinhua. In the article, Liu Jiang, deputy editor-in-chief of Xinhua News Agency, commented that “Developed contrives, which have one seventh of the world population, have dominated two thirds of the total information flow”.
Imagethief's insightful response is: Asian commercial media is a desperate wasteland that teeters perpetually on the precarious knife-edge of irredeemability…I blame government. Governments, by and large, should not involve themselves in media. But Asia's governments cannot, for the life of them, keep their grubby mitts off the media.

I have a serious question: just WHY is it that “…Asia’s governments cannot, for the life of them, keep their grubby mitts off the media”? Is it simply a question of political control by a ruling elite? Or is there something else at work that can only be understood by someone with an understanding of Asian history and culture? A related question is, if there is so much resistance to Western culture in Asian countries, why are some governments so slow in fighting software and media piracy?
