Israel: Unreasonable Student Demands

Israeli blogger Imshin is disgusted with the ‘unreasonable’ demands by Israeli students enrolled in subsidized universities. “So what we have here is one of the strongest segments of society, who are behaving like spoilt brats, violently demanding that the state continue to heavily subsidize them. The state is suggesting, via the Shochat committee, that they pay more, but are able to take loans so that they can pay for their education over an extended period. The state is also suggesting that more people will be eligible for grants and scholarships. And that people who are studying for highly paid professions, such as, I suppose, accountancy, will pay higher university tuition. In return, the state will increase the university budgets.
It all sounds extremely fair to me,” writes the blogger.

  • What Imshin doesn’t write about in the post is the fact that there was a big student ralley in Israel around 8 years ago. Back then, they were protesting against the same thing, and partially won the case against raising tuition. I’m not sure about the legalities of the agreement, but I know that slightly afterwards the government raised the price, and now is doing the same. What about staying true to agreements?
How about looking for other ways to find investment for the universities, other than through raising tuition? It is unfair to compare tuition to that in the states. Two completely separate realities. Remember, students usually come pretty much straight out of the army, with little of no money saved up. Most usually work at least one job outside of school.
    Just some thoughts…
