A testament, no doubt, to the unpredictable power of the new digital media technology we now all take for granted.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d be interested in hearing about three aspects of the whole issue in some more detail:
One, what was the basic premise of Khatami’s visit to Udine, and how did the video get filmed, then posted?
Two - to anyone who’s been reading the Iranian press - what has been the nature and extent of the reaction to the affair in Iran?
Three - what do people think the political consequences of Khatami’s misstep, and ensuing denial, could be?
I can say that Iranian conservative journals criticized Khatami and reformist journals supported him by “saying he did NOt shake hands with women” and the film is not real… a part of propaganda against Khatami.
I think Khatami lost a lot of his credibility in this affair among Iranian intellectuals.Of course not for shaking hands but for not saying the truth.
Khatami has been seen by many as a fearful man. I think he proved it again.
