Uganda: Green Kampala?

Kampala.ver asks, Green Kampala?: “Leonie Rhode is a German Landscape Architect and Environmental Planner whose Masters Thesis is a study about Kampala’s green areas (or whatever is left of it). She spent quite some time over here researching the matter and was smart enough to keep her video camera running…”

  • My humble opinion on the matter is that a lot of countries in Africa are not ready for green architecture or green anything -as with many countries in the West – because a lot of them don’t see the problem, and even the ones who do are not foresighted enough to actually care about long term solutions. I think changing the African focus on to these two things can have an exponential effect on the re-greening of Africa.

I come from Uganda.Uganda, like all other African countries were caught up with movements like women emancipation environmentalism, and globalization.Uganda was ready for the change.More emphasis in Uganda put on marginal areas, deforested areas, reforestation outside Kampala region. The author will notice that National Env Statute, which created NEMA as the single authority on environment in conjuction with Forest authority.Kampala city is 110 years old and some of trees were planted in early 1900s.The new buildings are designed with eco-friendly trees.Historically,Kampala, was abig swamp adjoining Lake victoria,British planted EUCALYPTUS TREES to soak the water and reduce the mosquitoes. Those trees near Agakhan university,Katwe road and adjacent to Makerere university.National Environmental Management Authority requires all constructions of projects to have Environmental impact assessment, which dont harm and deplete the aqautic resources.New improved trees are in place with the new structures
