Costa Rica: Alto precio del dominio .cr...

Cristian Cambronero of Fusil de Chispas [es] cannot believe that it costs $100 per year to purchase a .cr domain in Costa Rica.

    No wonder!

I wonder what kind of “logic” is behind that price.

A CCTLD like .CR should be the most used domain for local purposes in a country. The US is different because they took on .COM instead. Do to seemingly bad planning and execution, Costa Ricas CCTLD’s haven’t grown popular.

Most online businesses sadly use crazy .COM names with their company name and “CR” appended to it, although it

    1) gains less value in regards to search engines
    2) are less likely to show up in local searches
    3) are horrible to remember

Try a search for inurl:”co.cr” on Google and see the evidence:

Costa Rica has a large number of highly educated computer scientist, but still it seems very few decision-makers know anything about online marketing and search engines.

NIC.CR made a terrific move, when they decided to open .CR to the public, but if the goal is for .CR to gain momentum, customers and recognition, a price above $40 per domain will completely ruin their plans.

For a Top Level Domain to gain the value as it should, the demand and usage has to be high. The keyword here is “quantity”. Someone at NIC.CR clearly misunderstood the concept of supply and demand.

NIC.CR: Wake up and smell the (lovely Costa Rican) coffee!
